Notes from the Music Director
Dear friends in Christ, This year marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11. I’m sure that you, like me, were greatly moved by the September 11 tragedy in our country. We can all remember where we were when we first heard the news or saw the video footage of the twin towers. Our hearts ached to see so many innocent people suffering or mourning for their missing loved ones. I paged through several reports and looked at web pages dedicated to those people who died. Sadly, I stared at the lists of names and their pictures as if I knew them. Looking for comfort, I paged through my Bible and hymnal for some reassuring words. Of course, there are many passages and hymns that speak to this occasion, but I found this infrequently used hymn written by Martin Luther that helped me speak a prayer to God. I pray that it might help you also. In the very midst of life Death has us surrounded. When shall we a helper find, Hear his coming sounded? For you, our Lord, we’re waiting. We sorrow that we left your path, Doing what deserves your wrath. Holy, most righteous God! Holy, most mighty God! Holy and most merciful Savior! Forever our Lord! Keep us from despairing In the bitter pain of death. Have mercy, O Lord! Through the midst of hells of fear Our transgressions drive us. Who will help us to escape, Shield us, and revive us? Lord, you alone, our Savior. Your shed blood our salvation won; Sin, death, hell are now undone. Holy, most righteous God! Holy, most mighty God! Holy and most merciful Savior! Forever our Lord! Give us grace abounding; Keep us, keep us in the faith. Have mercy, O Lord! Lutheran Worship, Hymn 265. Text © 1978 Concordia Publishing House. Used by permission. “Yet as surely as the LORD lives and as you live, there is only a step between me and death.” 1 Samuel 20:3 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” Revelation 14:13 Yours in Him, All for Jesus, Scott Kamman Director of Music Chapel worship: Everyone is invited to worship with the school children each week as they gather for chapel on Wednesdays at 8:45 AM in the sanctuary. It is an excellent opportunity for midweek worship. Come and join us! Sep. 7: Scott Kamman, Director of Music Sep. 14: Grade 2 Sep. 21: Bethany Kuhnle, D.C.E. for Youth and Family Sep. 28: Grade 8 Song of the month: The children in our dayschool learn a special hymn or song of the month as part of their worship and religion class experience. For the months of August and September, they will be learning and singing the hymn, “Lift High the Cross,” written by George Kitchin. Christ's death on a torturous cross was a horror beyond compare. But it wasn't the end of his story: The gruesome cross experience opened the way to Jesus' glorious victory over sin and death. Those two ugly realities have plagued the human race since the Fall in Eden. But today, the outcome of that battle is sure: Christ conquered sin and death on the cross. Jesus' stunning sacrifice requires a response. And that's exactly what "Lift High the Cross" provides. With a triumphant melody, the hymn calls Christians to bring the story of the cross to the entire world. We are to "lift high the cross" for the world to see, so that they might come and adore Christ the victorious King.
Refrain: Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim, Till all the world adore his sacred name. 1. Come, Christians, follow where our Captain trod, Our king victorious, Christ, the Son of God. refrain 2. Led on their way by this triumphant sign, The hosts of God in conqu'ring ranks combine. refrain 3. All newborn soldiers of the Crucified Bear on their brows the seal of Him who died. refrain 4. O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, As thou hast promised, draw us all to Thee. refrain 5. So shall our song of triumph ever be: Praise to the Crucified for victory! refrain Words: George W. Kitchin, rev. Michael R. Newbolt Music: Sydney H. Nicholson (c) 1974 Hope Publishing Co., Carol Stream, IL 60188. All rights reserved. Used by permission. CCLI #841158.
Answer to the August quiz: The song which begins “We praise Thee, O God, we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord” is the “Te Deum” canticle from the Order of Matins. September quiz: Which hymn tells us: “For my Shepherd gently guides me, knows my need and well provides me”? Contemporary Worship Teams: Singers and musicians, if you are out there, know that we are always in need of volunteers to help us out at our 11:00 AM Majestic Celebration worship services. We are especially in need of guitarists, as well as wind instrumentalists. If you would like to sing or play on a regular basis, talk to Scott (426-1130 or

). Time commitment depends solely on you, as little or as much as you desire. We need you! Hearing Assist Devices: Had trouble hearing well in our sanctuary? These small sound amplifying devices are available from the ushers. Please ask for them! They amplify what is going through our sound system. (These devices do not work outside the sanctuary.) Worship Reminders: Remember to turn the ringer of your cell phone off when entering the sanctuary! (If Someone Important needs to get your attention during worship, you’ll hear the trumpet sound.) Thank you for maintaining a worshipful atmosphere. If you partake of the individual communion cup, please clearly hold the empty cup in front of you to help the communion assistant who is serving the common cup to see that you have already communed. Thank you. Have you ever arrived late for worship? Sometimes it is inevitable. However, please remember that if you do arrive late for the service, wait until the congregation begins singing a hymn, song, or piece of the liturgy before being seated. That is the appropriate and least distracting time to enter into worship. Thank you for maintaining a worshipful atmosphere! (Oh, and check your clock before next Sunday!)
Worship Notes
What does “Eucharist” mean?
It is one of the many terms we use for the Lord’s Supper. It comes from the Greek word meaning, “thanksgiving.” Even as Jesus gave thanks when he instituted the Lord’s Supper, so do we give thanks that in this holy meal our Lord gives us his body and blood for forgiveness and life.
In an effort to try to help us all learn about our worship life and liturgy, we offer this little “tidbit” of information each month. It can serve as a review for you, an answer to that question, “Why do we do that?”, or as a teaching tool for our children or grandchildren. Please share this with your family. Discuss it prior to worship. If there is something you would like to have answered, let me know. I’ll do my best to find out!

Youth News!
In August, our confirmands ventured off to Camp Lakeview for the annual retreat. We spent the weekend learning about our worship services. We spent time going through each part of the worship service and concluded the weekend participating in a worship service designed by our very own youth. We have had a successful kick-off to our high school Bible study. If you are a high school youth or know of one, please encourage them to join us for fellowship and Bible study. We will be meeting every Sunday night from 7 to 8:30. The 7th and 8th graders had a Girls vs. Boys lock-in to kick off the school year. The night was filled with competitions between the genders and gender-specific Bible studies. At the end of the night the score was tied between the sexes...in my opinion the girls won by far. =) What to look for in September: There is a parent meeting for all involved in confirmation on September 7th at 7:00. Jr. High Youth Rally at Camp Lakeview. September 16-17. Join other believers in the Indiana District at Camp Lakeview!! Elegant Dinner Dance! There are still jobs open for those who would like to help! The money raised will go to our future youth trips such as next year's mission trip and the National Youth Gathering in 2013. If you know of a great place to hang some posters, please stop by my office and pick some up! Encourage your friends to come!
Blessings, Bethany
