Greetings, in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! As things are being put in place for our fall start-up let me note a couple of items: First of all, I want to express my deepest appreciation for all help Pastor Lee Berndt has given this congregation. For the past several years Pastor Berndt has been our Visitation Pastor, primarily visiting the shut-in and home-bound, while also assisting me with hospital visits and funerals. Pastor Berndt also has been our leading trainer and supervisor for all our Stephen Ministers. Beginning this fall, Pastor Berndt is going to take some time to work on some professional projects. He will continue his roles with us with our Stephen Ministers and hospital visits. However, his role as Visitation Pastor is going to be split between Pastor Bob Koch and Pastor Henry Loppnow. Pastor Koch, many of you know, served Pilgrim congregation for many years. Pastor Loppnow likewise served Holy Cross congregation in Shelbyville until his retirement. Introductions of Pastor Koch and Pastor Loppnow to our home-bound and shut-ins will take place over the next few weeks. I’m look forward to working with these very dedicated and gifted servants of the Lord as we continue to serve you, the members of Our Savior. Secondly, I would like to ask your prayers for the Youth Director Call Committee as they seek the Spirit’s guidance to bring a second roster of candidates before the congregation. Thanks to the work of the chair of the committee, Ginny Cunningham, things are moving along well ahead of where they’d be without her diligence. The committee’s goal is to bring this action before the congregation in early fall. Again, your prayers are very much desired. Thirdly, a heads-up. Our Confirmation Retreat this year will again be at Camp Cedar Ridge in Taylorsville. We have moved the weekend back one week so that the retreat will not be the same weekend as the Jr. High Event at Camp Lakeview. So the dates are Friday evening, September 21 through Sunday afternoon, September 23. We will need volunteers for food, cooking and transportation. In Him, Pastor Fausel Serve the LordAnd whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. --Col. 3:17Under the banner of this verse, Our Savior Lutheran School faculty has adopted the theme for the 2007-08 school year of “Serve the Lord.” As a faculty we have pledged to lead the way in our words and deeds as we set the example for the children God has entrusted to our care for this coming school year. We invite all members of Our Savior to join with us as we grow the Kingdom through our interactions with others. The first day of school this fall is August 22. However, much is happening now as we prepare for opening day. Two important dates should be noted: August 15: Preschool, Preschool childcare, and Kindergarten Open House Stop by and visit between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Later that same day beginning at 7:00 pm, Mr. Brieschke will hold his annual “Ending the Homework Hassle” seminar. All members of the congregation are invited to attend. This seminar is especially valuable for children and parents from 3rd through 8th grade. August 18: Annual church and school grounds clean up 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Lunch will be provided. Help get the outside of the building looking good for all fall activities. Finally, a thank you to Mr. Mike Shorter and Mauricio Blanco for the excellent interior cleaning and painting of the school wing. IT LOOKS GREAT! In Christ, Martin A. Brieschke We Give Him PraiseGod has given His people the gifts to do so much but yet it is said, “I don’t see where God is working”. This monthly feature will spotlight different areas where people have seen God at work through His people . No names will be used for these are acts of service to the Glory of God. For this month we give thanks and praise to God for:

With Thanksgiving Present Your Requests To GodDo not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. –Philippians 4:6We have much for which to give thanks in educational ministries here at Our Savior. We also have requests that need to be met. So you are invited to follow Paul’s encouragement to the Philippians to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God.” You might be God’s answer to our joint requests. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – Quest for Truth, the theme of this year’s VBS was a hit as children searched each day for archeological clues to help them find the truth about Jesus. We give God thanks for almost 80 children who attended each day and for the opportunity they had to grow in faith. We give thanks for the 30 adult and youth volunteers who staffed our VBS or assisted behind the scenes. We certainly want to give thanks to God for Tracy Hannon who was our VBS Director for this year. She was a special gift from God who recruited and organized volunteers and saw to it that VBS ran smoothly each day. SUNDAY SCHOOL – We give thanks to God for Heidi Schulz and Leanne Hardin for their service for the past two and a half years as Co-Sunday School Superintendents. Their service has helped children learn more about their Lord and Savior. But they are ready to move into other areas of ministry. We have been seeking replacements for them for the past six months without success. We know that God has the right persons already selected. We just haven’t asked those persons yet. We invite you to join in our request that He would lead us to those persons whom He has selected to lead this vital area of ministry within our congregation. One of those persons might be you. If you feel the Lord calling to you to serve Him in this area, talk to Heidi, Leanne or Paul Nickel. They can give you all the information you might need to make an informed decision. We also are in need of Sunday School teachers for Preschool through 5th grade children. Is God calling you to serve Him in this ministry? Contact Paul Nickel if you want to know more. YOUTH MINISTRY – We give thanks for continuing Youth Ministry since Pastor Rogers accepted his Call. We give thanks to God for Ginny Cunningham and Melissa Nelson who have been instrumental making sure that Youth Ministry at Our Savior has continued over the last three years. We give thanks for Scott and Laura Frederickson and Carol Chinberg for working with our Junior High Sunday School class as well as other Junior High activities. We also give thanks for David and Leah Robison and Mark and Pat Otten who have organized and led monthly Sunday activities for our youth. We are searching for people to step up and fill the void left by Ginny Cunningham, Melissa Nelson, Scott and Laura Frederickson, and Carol Chinberg all of whom are moving on to other opportunities to serve this month after many years of service. This month, right now, today, we need a core group of people to plan and organize senior and junior high Youth Ministry. We need people to teach the senior and junior high Sunday morning Bible class beginning August 26th. Please lift up these requests to the Lord. There is a sense of urgency here. We cannot wait until the Lord brings us a called Youth Director. We don’t know when that will happen. We pray sooner than later. But we have these needs today! ADULT EDUCATION – We give thanks for Kyle Lohmeyer who year after year has led a Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class. We give thanks for our ChristCare Leaders: Norm Kendt, Pat and Mark Otten, David and Leah Robison, Emily Hayes, and Scott Kamman. We are thankful for all the lives these people touch with the Word of God as they lead Bible classes and ChristCare Groups. Beginning Sunday, October 7th, Our Savior Lutheran Church will be saturated with Experiencing God . We give thanks for the opportunity Experiencing God will provide for the Holy Spirit to move and grow the hearts and faiths of all of us. Pray that God will empower Pastor Fausel with His Spirit as he prepares a 12 part sermon series and companion Sunday morning Bible Studies. We give thanks for those who have volunteered to lead Experiencing God small groups. Please pray that God will move more people to become small group leaders. Pray that God will move every member of our congregation to desire to participate in a small group for the 12 weeks of this study. Pray that God will bring blessing upon blessing upon the leaders of these groups and those who participate in them. Pray that God will help us all to recognize where He is working and desire to join Him there. Paul Nickel, Director of Christian Education Look forward to Experiencing God through His Word in your daily life! ChristCare Groups - - Circles of Care with Christ at the CenterChrist is central to ChristCare Groups. ChristCare Group members meet Jesus Himself in their fellow group members, in the Scriptures, in their times of prayer and worship, and through their missional service. With Jesus at the center of all that the group is and does, group members grow as Jesus’ disciples, increasing in faith, joy, and love.ChristCare Groups are circles of care. ChristCare Group members give and receive Christ’s care to one another. When you’re in a ChristCare Group, you never have to go through a tough time alone, be it a major crisis or just the bumps and bruises of daily life. Your fellow group members are always there for you. When ChristCare Groups meet, they do four kinds of activities: community building and care; Biblical Equipping; prayer and worship; and missional service. The Holy Spirit works through these activities to make ChristCare Groups into “Circles of Care with Christ at the Center.” Four good reasons why ChristCare Groups are necessary for our congregation to be all God calls us to be . . . Reason 1: Christ’s Own ExampleMuch of Jesus’ most significant ministry took place with the small group He formed at the beginning of His ministry -- the twelve disciples. In this intimate setting Jesus shared the truth and wisdom of God, teaching them about prayer, holy living, faith, hope, and love.Reason 2: Building CommunityIn a world where people often feel isolated, there is a strong need to have a place “where everybody knows your name.” In ChristCare Groups, people feel loved and accepted and can share when they are happy or hurting.Reason 3: The Renewal of the ChurchWhenever the church has experienced renewal, small groups have played a key role. Groups do things that open members to the Spirits work: prayer and praise, Bible study, encouragement and support, equipping for ministry and witness, and service in daily life.Reason 4: The Growth of the ChurchThe early church multiplied by involving people in groups that met regularly for worship, mutual support, and growing together in faith. Today ChristCare Groups help our church grow by assimilating new members, evangelism, preventing inactivity, and increasing attendance at Sunday worship.Meet Our ChristCare Groups! Contemporary Worship Teams NEED YOU! Singers and musicians, if you are out there, know that we are still in need of volunteers to help us out at our 11:00 AM Majestic Celebration worship services. We are in special need of a keyboard leader and guitarists, as well as wind instrumentalists and vocalists. If you would like to sing or play on a regular basis, talk to Scott (426-1130). Time commitment depends solely on you, as little or as much as you desire. Summer is a great time to hop in and get your feet wet….give it a try! Hearing Assist devices: Had trouble hearing well in our sanctuary? These small sound amplifying devices are available from the ushers. Please ask for them! They amplify what is going through our sound system. If you would like to purchase your own personal set of earphones for use with the church sound system, please contact the church office. (These devices do not work outside the sanctuary.) Worship Notes! In an effort to try to help us all learn about our worship life and liturgy, we offer this little “tidbit” of information each month. It can serve as a review for you, an answer to that question, “Why do we do that?”, or as a teaching tool for our children or grandchildren. Please share this with your family. Discuss it prior to worship. If there is something you would like to have answered, let me know. I’ll do my best to find out! Check out this month’s edition of “Worship Notes!” THIS MONTH’S WORSHIP NOTE NOTESKyrie is a Greek word meaning “O Lord.” It is a cry to the Lord for help and strength. In ancient times, the crowds would shout “Lord, have mercy” as the king entered their town. The church has taken over this prayer to greet its King Jesus Christ in the church service. As the people long ago expected help from their king, so we Christians expect blessings from Our Savior.MUSIC MINISTRYOur Savior’s Fall Music Program will be starting up soon. We have many opportunities for service for those of you who have been blessed with musical talent and wish to use it for God’s glory. This is a great way to not only serve the Lord, but also do something that you enjoy. Please feel free to give our groups a try! We’d love to have you.Adult Choir will be starting up again on Thursday, September 6 with a choir open house and refreshments. We will continue to meet on Thursday evenings from 7:30 PM to 8:45 PM in the music room. Anyone, high school age or older, is welcome to join us. This is a great way to use your talents in an enjoyable way. We are especially in need of male singers. Come join us! Questions? Talk to Scott Kamman**. Contemporary Worship Teams still graciously welcome any musician who is interested in using his or her talent to help us in our contemporary worship. Schedules for worship teams will be drawn up in August for the fall. If you would like to sing or play on a regular basis, talk to Scott Kamman**. Time commitment depends solely on you, as little or as much as you desire. We are in need of both singers and instrumentalists. Adult Handbell Choir will be starting up on Thursday, September 13. We will meet on Thursday evenings directly before the choir rehearsal, beginning at 6:30 PM in the choir room. Anyone, high school age or older, is welcome to join us. Basic music note reading ability is our only requirement. If you’ve played handbells before, we will need you this fall!! Talk to Scott Kamman**. Junior Handbell Choir is for any child from Our Savior Lutheran Church or School in grades 4-8 who has an interest in playing and has some music reading skills. We will be having an informational meeting for new ringers and their parents on Wednesday, August 29 in the music room, from 3:30 to 4:00 PM. If you wish to be involved, but cannot make the meeting, please notify Mr. Kamman**. Beginning August 31, we will be practicing after school from 3:30 - 4:30 PM in the music room, with beginners meeting on Wednesdays and returning advanced ringers on Tuesdays. Talk to Mr. Kamman if you have questions. Our Savior Lutheran School Band will be starting up this fall for our school children in grades 3-6. Look for more information in upcoming Panther Tales and school mailings. **Scott Kamman can be reached at 426-1130. From the Music DirectorDear friends in Christ,The first part of our summer sure has been a dry one. Despite recent rains, our rainfall deficit is still way below normal. There for awhile, I think my grass stopped growing completely for about 3 or 4 weeks. Gave my mower a rest, for sure. Our summertime worship habits can sometimes be a little “dry” sometimes. Because of vacations and time off, we often become lax in our worship attendance during the summer months. How good for us and refreshing it is when we come back and are fed with the Bread of Heaven, when we drink from the Wellspring of Life. Our lives “perk up” and become spiritually healthier. We experience God’s goodness. But, we must remember to keep coming back for this nourishment, otherwise our lives become dry and near death, like the grass in my yard by the end of the summer! Now that summer is winding down and school will be starting soon, I hope that you will make it a commitment to “water” your spiritual life in worship and Bible Study as often as you can so that you may benefit from hearing God’s Word and grow in his grace. See you in worship and Bible Study! 1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Psalm 1 Yours in Christ, Scott Kamman Thank YouDear Our Savior Lutheran Church,Members and attendees of Redeemer Lutheran Church wish to express deepest gratitude to Bruce Yungman for helping us in a legal issue. Bruce put in immense effort, over an extended period of time, to bring about a positive resolution. All of Bruce's time and expertise were donated freely to our Church. Thank you so much, Bruce and God Bless you and Our Savior Lutheran Church! Wayne Jones, President Pastor Tom Engle John Coppage, Head Deacon Kirk Randolph, Treasurer And all other members of Redeemer Lutheran Church Money Counters NeededAdditional people are needed to work in the area of counting the offering money. Current members need to step down from the position and new people are needed to take over the task. Anyone interested in helping to count the offering should contact the church office, 426-1130. Free on-the-job training is provided. Please prayerfully consider if you could assist in this area of service.Childcare Project Team UpdateIn keeping with the Great Commission, our vision is to foster the establishment of a new outreach ministry for Our Savior Lutheran Congregation in the form of a self-supporting high quality Christian Early Childhood Development Center (for children 6 weeks to 5 years of age).Church Development Partners (CDP) has informed us that they will not be able to work with us until the first quarter of 2008. Since we cannot wait that long to identify sites on which to perform a Market Study, we have switched to “Plan B” and are exploring alternative ways of obtaining help:
Larry Jung will visit Our Savior On July 17th, view all the potential sites and meet with the Childcare Project Team and Missional Planning Committees. He will comment on all the sites, the proposed Open Arms business plan, the possibility of obtaining a mortgage based on the proposed business plan; as well as, give us advice and counsel on how to proceed. Hopefully he will also have a recommendation to replace CDP. Among the potential sites the Team is investigating is an existing, but vacant, Daycare facility that may offer the possibility of being developed into Childcare Center and Worship Center. The Architectural Evaluation of our current campus, for the feasibility of adding a Childcare Center to the property, has been delayed, but it will be completed by the end of August. Don Amt (the Indiana District Architectural Advisor) is doing the evaluation and we expect a visit from him around August 1st. The Team is attempting to move the project along as fast as possible, but wants to ensure we thoroughly do the upfront “homework” necessary for success and are following God’s will for us. We estimate that the schedule presented at the May 20th, congregation meeting for Market Studies in Sep-Oct with a recommendation to the congregation in the Nov-Dec timeframe will be met. The congregation’s prayers are requested to help Our Savior determine the Lord’s will. Summer Sunday Adult Bible ClassBeginning with this month and continuing through September 30th all adults are encouraged to attend the HEROES OF THE FAITH Bible Class that is meeting in the Fellowship Hall. Because of the comings and goings of our members during the summer months each study is designed to stand alone. That is, you will not feel lost or behind if you miss one or more weeks at a time. Pastor Fausel and Paul Nickel will be leading the study. Here is the schedule for August:August 5-The Poor Woman August 12-Thomams August 19-Isaiah August 26-Rally Day (Everyone meets in the sanctuary for the Bible Study hour) Financial UpdateWe are still reviewing the final information to close out our financial statements for the fiscal year ended June 30. Preliminary results indicate that we will report an operating surplus of $30,000 - $40,000 for the year. This is the second consecutive year that we have shown an operating surplus after 7-8 years of operating deficits.Giving (excluding designated gifts) was up 1.7% versus budgeted amounts. As expected, day school tuition income was down due to lower-than-budgeted enrollment levels. All other school revenues were up versus budget. Spending in all areas except for school textbooks was below what was budgeted. Final fiscal year 06-07 financial results will be published in the September newsletter. Through this program additional educational materials many be selected. Please drop them off in the school lobby in the designated box.The Survey Says…You may remember we did a follow-up survey last March regarding congregational attitudes toward our school ministry. This was the same survey done in the Spring of 2004 as we embarked on our National Lutheran School Accreditation process. During the next few months, we’ll be sharing survey results with you.The first question has to do with meeting our purpose as an outreach ministry of the church. In 2004, 72% of the respondents strongly agreed or agreed that was happening. Our latest results indicate 87% in those same two categories of approval. Disagrees and strongly disagrees have declined from 17% to 8% in the past three years. The school is fulfilling its purpose as an outreach ministry of Our Savior Lutheran Church.
Question #2 dealt with the school ministry being an asset to the church as a whole. Again, positive responses (agree or strongly agree) have increased from 93% to 100%. The school is an asset to Our Savior Lutheran Church.
The third question asked about perceptions of our school ministry reputation in the community. This year 100% of the respondents felt we were well respected. The number who strongly agreed substantially increased from 2004 when 24% filled in that category. Our Savior Lutheran School is well respected as a provider of a Christian education in the community.
When asked if the congregation cares about the quality of the school ministry, this past March only 4% strongly disagreed. In 2004 9% either had no opinion or disagreed with the statement. I care about the quality of academics and activities provided by the school
We are pleased that God continues to bless our school ministry and that it continues to be well received by the congregation as a whole. Next month we’ll look at the next 4 questions. Thank you for your continued interest in and support of this significant ministry of Our Savior. "I Believe"On a recent trip to Alabama, Kathy & I visited a nice little church "St. Andrew By The Sea". The congregation is an older one with few children. The pastor is a wonderful leader and greatly respected by the community. Pastor Warren is in his early 50's and is truly loved by all. They are in a building mode despite the terribly high costs of construction and insurance rates due mainly to their coastal location. His sermon for that Sunday was "Can't Live Without You" and basically said 3 things --- " I believe in God, I believe in Myself, and finally, I believe in You"!Please take a few moments to reflect on this message. Your answer is simply -- "I Believe" Our Savior is no different than St. Andrew with the exception that we are so fortunate to have many, many children attend our school and church. The Youth of the Kingdom are watching and waiting for our direction. They "BELIEVE" in us and we in turn "BELIEVE" in them. The YOUTH DIRECTOR call group is hard at work. Give them your prayers and support. Let them know that "YOU BELIEVE" Peace, Larry - Stewardship 2007 Rally Day and Church PicnicSunday, August 26, is Rally Day and the Church Picnic. Please mark your calendar now. During the Bible Study hour adults will meet in the sanctuary and learn of the Bible Study opportunities for this coming fall. Sunday School children will meet for their opening in the choir room and then go into their new classes. Following the late service will be the church picnic. |
