Pastor's Message: ALL FOR JESUS!

Greetings in the Name of Jesus, the Christ!  Amen.

Last month’s newsletter spoke generally about our theme for this year, All for Jesus.  The kick-off of this theme will be on Reformation Day Weekend with an event called…

CHANGE OF HEART.

This will be a bigger, more inclusive event than the dedication of our current church building.  Yes, I want all to attend.

Why?  Because that weekend will be something important for each of us as members of Our Savior … as well as for us together as a church.  You’ll be hearing more about the logistics … the how, when and where … in the coming weeks.  But, much of what will go on will be a surprise.

This I can tell you:  there will be great music and there will be some first-class nationally recognized speakers.   There will even be some things to buy!

Our planning group has been meeting weekly for the past two months and will continue to press on as they are doing this for Jesus … but all that will be for naught if we aren’t there.

So, again, I ask you to set this time aside … Friday evening, October 29… Saturday morning and afternoon, October 30, and Sunday morning, October 31.
It will be fun, inspiring, and something I pray you’ll carry with you the rest of your days.

For now, I do ask for your prayers.   Pray for those setting up this event for us.   Pray for those who at this moment are being asked to come to Louisville to be part of the event… and pray for us as a congregation that we all might be full participants on that weekend.

Honestly … it is ALL ABOUT JESUS!

In Him,
Pastor Fausel

Notes from the Music Director

Dear friends in Christ,

We are told that at the top of every music manuscript of the great Johann Sebastian Bach appear the two Latin words: “Iesu, iuva!”— “Jesus, help!” The world’s mightiest master of music did not dare place his fingers on the organ or compose a single melody without first calling on his Lord for help.

In Luther’s Small Catechism we are instructed to begin every day with a prayer to God for guidance and protection and then “go joyfully to our work, singing a hymn,” trusting that God will grant success to all that we undertake in His name.

The everyday goal of every Christian should be “abiding in the Vine,” being grafted into the Savior, who is the Source of all our strength. “I am the Vine, you are the branches,” says Jesus, “he that abides in Me, and I in Him, the same brings forth much fruit, for without Me you can do nothing.”  Paul had experienced the truth of this teaching. That is why he could say: “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”  Let us make sure that in every task we undertake, be it great or small, we are undertaking it with Christ and in Christ; then we can be confident that we will prevail through Christ!

We now begin another school year after a summer of rest. Many opportunities exist for us all to “abide in the Vine” at Our Savior Lutheran Church -- through Christian Education and participation in the many ministries of our church. I encourage you to take advantage of these many opportunities for your personal spiritual growth. Join us in Bible Study. Get involved with a ChristCare group.  Find a ministry that suits your talents and gifts.  Bring your children and your grandchildren!  Find a way to be grafted to the Vine.

As we set forth (as Bach did), having committed our endeavor to Him in prayer, let us grow in Him cheerfully, boldly, confidently—knowing that in all things He will guide, strengthen, and bless us. Whatever the outcome, be it success or even seeming failure, we will know that our labors have been performed in His name and the results will be in accord with His good and gracious purpose.

Yours in Christ,
Scott Kamman
Director of Music

“I am the Vine, you are the branches,” says Jesus, “he that abides in Me, and I in Him, the same brings forth much fruit, for without Me you can do nothing.”  John 15:5

Summer Choir and Praise Team Thank You: Thanks to our Summer Choir for your participation in our worship during the summer months.  Thanks also to our Praise Teams who continue on without break through the summer.  Your willingness to serve is greatly appreciated!

Hymn of the Month: The children in our dayschool learn a special hymn or song of the month as part of their worship and religion class experience.  For the months of August and September, they will be learning the hymn, “God Himself Is Present,” written by Gerhard Tersteegen (1697-1769).

God Himself is present:
Let us now adore Him
And with awe appear before Him.
God is in His temple--
All within keep silence,
Humbly kneel in deepest reverence.
He alone on His throne,
Is our God and Savior;
Praise His name forever!

Light of light eternal,
All things penetrating,
For your rays our soul is waiting,
As the tender flowers,
Willingly unfolding,
To the sun their faces holding:
Even so Would we do,
Light from you obtaining,
Strength to serve you gaining.

Chapel Worship: Everyone is invited to worship with the school children each week as they gather for chapel on Wednesdays at 8:45 AM in the sanctuary.  It is an excellent opportunity for midweek worship.  Come and join us!

Answer to the August Quiz: The hymn that prays the petition, “Assist my soul, too apt to stray, a stricter watch to keep” is “Oh, That the Lord Would Guide My Ways.”  LSB 707

September Quiz: Which hymn states, “He makes our sorrowing spirit sing”?

Communion Reminder: If you partake of the individual communion cup, please clearly hold the empty cup in front of you to help the communion assistant who is serving the common cup to see that you have already communed.   Thank you.

Hearing Assist Devices: Had trouble hearing well in our sanctuary?  These small sound amplifying devices are available from the ushers.  Please ask for them!  They amplify what is going through our sound system.  (These devices do not work outside the sanctuary.)

Worship Notes

Every once in a while, we stand for the last verse of a hymn.  Why is that?

We are standing to show reverence to God during the singing of a Trinitarian verse, a verse that mentions all three persons of the Godhead:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  We often designate that verse with the symbol Trinity triangle.

In an effort to try to help us all learn about our worship life and liturgy, we offer this little “tidbit” of information each month.  It can serve as a review for you, an answer to that question, “Why do we do that?”, or as a teaching tool for our children or grandchildren.  Please share this with your family.  Discuss it prior to worship.  If there is something you would like to have answered, let Scott know.  He’ll do his best to find out!

Junior Handbell Choir is for any child from Our Savior Lutheran Church or School in grades 4-8 who has an interest in playing and has some music reading skills.  Beginning the week of August 30, we will be practicing after school from 3:30 - 4:30 PM in the music room.  First year beginners will meet on one day; advanced students on another.  The schedule has yet to be determined, but watch the Panther Tale for rehearsal start-up dates.  Questions?  Ask Scott Kamman

Instrumentalists are always welcome to participate in worship, either by assisting in the accompanying of the hymns or playing special music for the worship service.  Talk to Scott Kamman.
