What's Happening at School
Thursday, 01 October 2009 00:00
Several major activities involving school families are scheduled this month.  First of all, we invite all school and congregational families to attend our annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 10, from 12-4 PM. The day will include food, fellowship, games, crafts, and fun for all ages.

The month ends with our annual Book Fair which begins on Wednesday, October 21 and runs through Friday, October 23.  The books will be on display in the gymnasium during the hours our teachers are meeting with parents for their end of the first quarter conferences;  Wednesday afternoon from 3:30-8:30, Thursday from 12 – 8:30 PM, and Friday from 9 AM until Noon.  All are welcome to visit and purchase from the fair.  Proceeds are used to enhance our library collection.

On Monday and Tuesday, October 26 & 27, our faculty will be traveling to Indianapolis to join with the other teachers in the Indiana District for our annual Teachers’ Conference.  Teachers will be choosing from over 50 sectionals for presentations that will improve their classroom and our school as a whole.  One of the great joys of these conferences is the worship time when over 600 professional church workers join together to celebrate God’s great love for us.  Those worship times together help encourage us as we bring that same message to our classrooms each day.

It’s not too early to begin telling your friends and neighbors about our annual recruitment Open House scheduled for Sunday, November 15, from 2-4 PM.  It has certainly been evident to me that many have been inviting others to learn about our school.  This  ”word-of-mouth” advertising is still the best way we have of recruiting new students to this outstanding Christian Educational Ministry.

A special congratulation goes out to Mrs. Karen Tate, Computer and Spanish teacher, who has successfully completed her colloquy and earned a Lutheran Teacher’s Diploma.  This is a very special accomplishment and worthy of much praise.  “Well done, Mrs. Tate!”

J-Walking Now Legal in School
Tuesday, 01 September 2009 00:00

That’s correct! When the new school year begins, our faculty and staff will be encouraging all students to be “J-Walkers”.  That stands for “Jesus Walkers”.  Under the banner of Isaiah 2: 3b, 5 our theme for the 2009-10 school year is to “…walk in His paths” and “…walk in the light of the Lord”.  We look forward to helping all 200+ students grow in this theme as the year develops.

You read that correctly…As of this writing there are 200 students enrolled in school for this year.  We still have a week to go before school begins and have people visiting and calling daily seeking information.  Who knows how many God will send our way before all is said and done.  What a privilege it will be for our faculty and staff to share God’s love and grace with these students.

Speaking of faculty, we are pleased that all are returning for the 2009-10 school year.  This will allow for real consistency and cohesiveness as we work together in this important ministry of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite all to “Come & See” school in action whenever you might be in the building.  By September 1 we should have SMARTBoards in all classrooms, including the preschool and music room.  If you have not seen our teachers use this amazing technology, make it a point to come in and watch how education has changed.

We continue to give thanks to God for this ministry and ask His presence be evident among us.

In Christ,
Martin A. Brieschke

God at Work

What a joy it is to report to you this month that an additional 12 new students will join our school family in January.  God continues to send us families seeking Christian education for their children.  And He sends them to us from as far away as Korea.  For the third consecutive year, 8 Korean students will study with our students for the months of January and February.  This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to learn about a culture far different than their own and teach our visitors about our culture as well as our faith.  In addition to the 8 Korean students who will be joining grades 3-6, we are welcoming a new 6th and 7th grade family transferring from another school in Louisville, and two preschoolers as well.  The end result will be a school enrollment of 196 students through February and 188 after our Korean visitors return to their home.

God is also at work in the tremendous outpouring of help for the Back family who recently lost their home in a fire.  We thank God that so many of our school families have joined in this effort to help get this family back on their feet.  What started out as a small activity to provide the family with a few gifts for their one and five-year-old children has grown to huge proportions.  We thank God for this opportunity He’s given us to join Him in His work.

Re-enrollment Gears Up

School families have recently received their re-enrollment packets for the 2008-09 school year.  We also send those to all members of our congregation with school aged children.  Within the next 6 weeks we’ll be gathering those highest priority applications before officially acting on new applications received.  We already have in hand 7 of those spanning preschool through grade 6.  You can join God where He is at work sending us students by inviting your friends and neighbors to contact our school office (426-0864) to find out more about becoming a student at Our Savior.

We started this school year with 184 students and look forward to reaching 200 when school starts next August.

Joy to Share

There’s Much Joy to Share!

It was a fantastic day!  Recruitment Open House day I mean.  A steady stream of students, both new and old, came through our building that afternoon.  I was extremely proud of our presently enrolled students (Student Activity Leadership Team (S.A.L.T.) members) who served as tour guides and all our choirs, band, and hand bell groups who provided musical entertainment for our visitors.  Our own school board members also served as guides for new families.  At one point we had so many visitors we had to recruit additional students and parents to help us out, which they all did willingly.  Smiles adorned all faces.  And the bottom line – we welcomed 16  new families to our program, one of which has already submitted an application for 2007-08.

Now that’s some joy to share!

But that’s not all.  On November 21 we held our annual “Thanksgiving Feast”.  Numerous volunteers cooked over 120 lbs of turkey for us.  The lunch room staff made the mashed potatoes and gravy and kept everything running smoothly, students from the upper grades helped set up and clean up afterwards, and families brought salad, vegetable, or desserts to share with all.  My estimate was over 250 people in attendance as we gave thanks to God for all the blessings He showers upon us.

Now that’s some joy to share!

But that’s not all.  As I write, a committee of parents is already actively working on plans for the annual “Taste of Our Savior”; Mr. Kamman and staff are preparing for the annual Christmas program; others are diligently coordinating the L.E.A.F Campaign; still others are leading basketball and thinking about that annual tournament at the end of January; and in the midst of it all, students are daily in God’s Word, daily growing in academics, daily learning how to live and play with others, daily experiencing quality Christian education with a personal touch..

Now that’s some joy to share!

I cannot imagine how anyone who is involved at Our Savior Lutheran Church and School cannot find overwhelming joys to share and give thanks to God for abundant and overflowing blessings.

May your Christmas season be filled with reasons to share the joy!

In Him,
Martin A. Brieschke
